Deferred Care Payments

As citizens live longer and with council budgets tight, the social care system that supports us in our later years is under increasing pressure.

Depending on a person’s wealth, they may be entitled enter into a deferred payment agreement with the council to pay for their care if they have sufficient assets to repay these upon death. This means that they do not need to sell their home when they enter care.

To assist people in understanding how these changes might affect them and whether they would have entitlement to a deferred payment, we have, in partnership with the DCLG and 7 local authorities, designed and built a Deferred Care Cost Payment Calculator and will be building an associated online application form as we move closer to April 2016.

This allows citizens to see 24/7 from the comfort of their home, on the device of their choice, whether they would be eligible to have their care costs payments deferred and if so complete an online form to request this.

OpenAPIs have been developed to allow for data to be passed to and from central government.

For example maximum rates of interest can be sent to Councils and all data of calculations carried out (anonymised) can be passed back to Central Government from Councils.
